Overview
We were tasked with developing marine bearings and shaft housing for a large rotating shaft operating under heavy load with oscillations identified in prior simulations. Since the design required self-lubricating materials and the involvement of specialist manufacturers, our team managed both the technical specifications and partnerships. We faced significant challenges due to poor-quality work from the firm originally responsible for the shaft and housing. This included a hollow PTFE tube supplied without meeting the correct material standards, requiring extensive post-processing and manual finishing. Despite these setbacks, we managed to deliver a final solution that met all performance requirements.
Methodology
We began with a full analysis of the shaft dynamics and load conditions, specifying suitable self-lubricating materials for the bearings. Our team managed relationships with specialist manufacturers to ensure reliable production. Poor-quality work on the original shaft required corrective adjustments, including manual turning and approval by our internal chartered engineer. The housing system presented an even greater challenge when the original delivery plan fell through, leaving us only one-eighth of the timeframe for redesign. Through around-the-clock design work, we were able to develop a completely new boot and throat methodology that could be manufactured within the limited time and supplier constraints.
Results Discussion
The project delivered a fully functional marine bearing and shaft housing system that met all specifications despite severe quality and time challenges. The successful outcome demonstrated the importance of direct quality oversight, agile redesign, and close collaboration with manufacturers. While the final solution did not reach the same standard our original methodology might have achieved due to time and manufacturing limitations, it still met all specifications and was successfully implemented. This project highlighted our team’s resilience and adaptability when faced with external quality issues and tight deadlines.
