Development of Modular Sheet Metal Grow Bed System
Overview
Frequent failures in string-tension plastic grow bed liners created harvesting issues and ongoing maintenance problems. This project replaced that system with a modular sheet metal channel design that can stack and connect to form scalable growing lines. Integrated runoff bins with lids improved drainage and reduced blockages in water-recirculating environments. Custom irrigation mounts secured perimeter pipework while absorbing movement from pressure changes. Although the system increased upfront cost, it delivered stronger durability, cleaner operation, and reduced long-term disruption in water-sensitive growing applications.

Methodology
Our work began with a practical review of how and why the existing liner system failed in use. From there, concept development focused on strength, modularity, and ease of manufacture. Interlocking sheet metal geometry provided rigidity without complex assembly. Drainage paths were designed to prevent soil ingress and protect recirculation systems. Irrigation mounts were developed alongside injection moulding constraints to ensure production feasibility. Throughout development, manufacturing cost and lifetime value were reviewed to confirm suitability for targeted agricultural environments.

Results Discussion
The new design removed exposed strings, reducing snagging, breakage, and harvesting delays. Steel construction improved structural stability and extended service life. Integrated drainage management supported cleaner water recirculation and reduced maintenance intervention. While material and fabrication costs were higher, the system proved commercially viable where durability, labour efficiency, and water management outweigh upfront savings. The key outcome was a more robust, modular solution built around long-term performance rather than short-term cost reduction.
